SORA
INTRODUCTION
SORA was a multiplayer game developed in Flash in 2005 where players could alter their avatar that would then be sent into a virtual world to interact autonomously with other avatars. Players had among many features a blog, a closet to change their avatar’s outfit, a store to purchase items, as well as a graph where the status of their avatar was noted on social skills, physical skills, and mental skills that affected their interaction in the world.
CHALLENGES
Not only did the concept of the game have to be compelling, so did the interface. Flash was the only web technology at the time (mid to late 2000s) that was capable of this. As a member of the initial team and co-designer, I was also an information architect and built out wireframes for the UI/UX. Then programming with extensive Actionscript I created a compelling user-friendly interactive interface with animations, drag and drop interactions, and used Flash Remoting to interface with the database for dynamic content.
OVEN EDU
INTRODUCTION
In 2000 using the now defunct application Director, I was one of the developers who made an immersive science website on the natural world.
CHALLENGES
Facing various technical limitations but finding solutions, we were able to create an immersive video-like site before broadband was ubiquitous while utilizing an application that could not easily handle the complexity and demands of the project.
WINBLOCKS
INTRODUCTION
Using Flash in 2001, I was one of the developers who made an antecedent to Facebook for what was to be a new venture of WinFirst.
CHALLENGES
As a precursor to Facebook, we developed our own model for community, community interaction, and personal profile pages. How did others find each other in this digital world? What did this world look like? What would users upload and share?
WINSCREEN
INTRODUCTION
Using Flash in 2001, I was one of the developers who made an online broadband guide for subscribers for a forthcoming broadband cable provider.
CHALLENGES
THe project was to design the UI and develop the home screen for broadband cable subscribers that not only had a TV guide/schedule, but also local news, advertisements, and features.
BRAINPOP JR.
INTRODUCTION
Brainpop Jr. is a children’s educational website that wanted to develop interactive educational games in Flash.
CHALLENGES
Brainpop Jr. wanted several templates for games where the content/pieces could be easily changed without creating many time-consuming hardcoded iterations. In addition to designing some of the games, I developed all the wireframes, UI/UX, and then programmed game templates with Actionscript in Flash, where various elements could be easily and quickly swapped out for different lessons using XML text files to utilize different images and copy. There were drag and drop interactions, a puzzle, drawing, and collaging among various other games.
Below is a video of some of the Flash games aggregated into one video/page.
DSQUARED
INTRODUCTION
Fashion company Dsquared, wanted a new website in Flash to highlight their ad campaigns, clothing, and other collateral as well as display an archive of older material.
CHALLENGES
I had to develop a compelling animated Flash website that animated in style that complimented the brand without distracting from it. In addition, the site needed to be easily updated without a Flash developer, so I built the site to be easily updated with XML text files that pulled in the properly formatted images and also added new sections.
VANITY FAIR
Featured on Vanityfair.com, I developed an animated cosmology of the publishing world where the various networks and relationships of each person is animated, highlighted, and explained.
WORDPRESS & SQUARESPACE
Additionally, I have helped develop and maintain several WordPress and Squarespace websites for various small and large clients including advertising agency EMPOWER.
